Raiders shake up front office with surprising move

The Las Vegas Raiders decided to make yet another major move in an offseason already loaded with them.

When head coach Pete Carroll and general manager John Spytek took over, changes were expected across the board. While some familiar faces remained within the organization, most spots got filled out with new names. The moves represented a reset by the Raiders, hoping this new vision is the one to carry them back to prominence.

The turnover has not stopped, however, as the Raiders have made yet another significant move.

The Raiders have decided to move on from assistant general manager Champ Kelly.

A report from NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero on Monday confirmed that Kelly and the Raiders mutually agreed to part ways.

In hindsight, Kelly moving on is not entirely unsurprising. Spytek is the third general manager that Kelly has seen take over the Raiders since joining the organization. Surviving that much turnover and even being named interim GM in 2023 is a testament to how highly the Raiders viewed Kelly, but he ultimately decided to pursue opportunities elsewhere.

Kelly’s stint on the unemployment line is expected to be short, however.

Kelly continued to build off positive momentum from his time with the Denver Broncos and Chicago Bears, helping to build a Raiders core that has intriguing pieces. He also interviewed for the Jacksonville Jaguars’ GM vacancy earlier this offseason, indicating that his reputation in NFL circles remains intact. As such, it will not take long for Kelly to land on his feet in another team’s front office.

Spytek continues to reshape the front office, and Kelly appears to no longer fit the vision the Raiders have in mind.
