Raiders Secondary 'Looks Troublesome On Paper'—Pro Football Focus

Pro Football Focus recently ranked the Las Vegas Raiders secondary dead last ahead of training camp—are the concerns legitimate?

All offseason, many within Raider Nation have pleaded their case on social media for their team to address the cornerback position. Of course, as we’ve all seen, general manager John Spytek hasn’t made any “splashy” moves. Jalen Ramsey, for example, could’ve helped tremendously, but the Raiders stood firm.

The youth movement in Sin City is clearly a priority. The Raiders coaching staff, under new head coach Pete Carroll, who is known for his expertise in defensive backs, will give their players an opportunity to prove themselves. However, Pro Football Focus seems to be unimpressed with what the Silver and Black have put together.

What is PFF saying about the Raiders’ secondary?

“Despite several offseason additions aimed at improving the secondary, this unit looks troublesome on paper,” writes John Kosko of PFF. “Safety Jeremy Chinn is the most seasoned veteran, but his 65.2 grade in 2024 was his best in three years—a reflection of recent struggles.”

While Chinn is not a flawless player, he offers certain intangibles that benefit Patrick Graham’s secondary. Entering his sixth season in the league, Chinn has some of the most active hands you’ll see from an NFL safety. Last season alone he recorded five pass deflections and an interception for the Washington Commanders. The former second-round pick might blossom into something special under Carroll’s guidance.

“The team drafted cornerback Darien Porter in the third round, and he could provide a spark. But the unit is expected to start multiple players who posted coverage grades below 50.0 last season,” Kosko added. Porter has the potential to be a key player worth monitoring. Unless there are changes to the roster, he is likely to receive significant playing time, especially with newcomer Eric Stokes occupying the nickel slot.

No one is claiming that this secondary is perfect; in fact, it is far from it. However, having Carroll work with many of the previously mentioned players, along with younger talents like Jakorian Bennett and Isaiah Pola-Mao, will significantly benefit this secondary. On paper, if you’re going off PFF grades from last year, of course there’ll be concern. Nonetheless, as we’ve seen with Carroll, things can change in a big way from one year to the next.
