Raiders hire NCAA Championship winning OC

ESPN reports that Chip Kelly is stepping down from his role with the Buckeyes after just one season to become the offensive coordinator under Pete Carroll with the Las Vegas Raiders.

This move follows the recent departure of defensive coordinator Jim Knowles, who has taken a similar position at Penn State.

Kelly joined Ohio State following the 2023 season when Ryan Day relinquished play-calling responsibilities.

He transitioned from being the head coach at UCLA to lead the Buckeyes’ offense, helping the team recover from two regular-season losses to clinch a spot in the inaugural 12-team College Football Playoff.

Having previously coached the Philadelphia Eagles and the San Francisco 49ers, Kelly has yet to hold an offensive coordinator role in the NFL.

He joined the Eagles before the 2013 season after four successful years as the head coach at Oregon and spent one challenging season with the 49ers in 2016 after Philadelphia fired him.

During his three seasons with the Eagles, Kelly recorded a 26-21 record, securing a 10-6 record in each of his first two years.

However, he faced challenges in his final season, finishing 6-9 before being dismissed prior to the end of the 2015 season.

His time with the 49ers was less than favorable. After a winning start in Week 1, the team managed only two wins and suffered 13 straight losses. He was the team’s third head coach in as many seasons.

After a year at ESPN, Kelly returned to coaching as the head of the UCLA football program, where he found success, leading the Bruins to at least eight wins in each of his final three seasons there.
