During this Sunday’s morning match-up against the Detroit Red Wings, Quinn Hughes broke yet another Vancouver Canucks franchise record.

The reigning Norris Trophy winner notched his 311th career assist, officially surpassing Alex Edler for most assists by a defenceman in Canucks history. Quinn Hughes is 25 years old in his seventh NHL season and breaks Edler’s record with 537 fewer games played. Edler had previously held the defenceman assist record since January of 2020.

Hughes’ record-breaking assist came on a power play goal scored by Jake DeBrusk. Hughes connects with Elias Pettersson from the point, and DeBrusk, at net front, manages to foil Detroit’s Cam Talbot moments later.

Hughes would go on to record career assist number 312 in the same period on yet another DeBrusk power play goal, this time credited with the lone helper.

Hughes would complete a trifecta with a third assist in this game on the overtime winner, also a hat trick for DeBrusk. This is Hughes’ second assist on an overtime winner in as many games, following his assist on Conor Garland’s overtime goal against the Buffalo Sabres on Friday afternoon.

Following the Canucks’ 5-4 road win over the Red Wings, Quinn Hughes officially holds the defenceman assist franchise record at 313 career assists. Edler remains in second with 310, followed by Dennis Kearns in third with 290.

The Canucks captain is having yet another successful season. Following his 17-goal, 92-point Norris trophy campaign, Hughes has five goals and 23 assists for 28 points this season. After he was ejected for a cross-check to Ottawa Senators forward Josh Norris, Hughes has made a statement as he is currently riding a four-game point streak, totalling one goal and eight assists for nine points over that span.

After their game against the Minnesota Wild on Tuesday, Hughes and the Canucks return to Rogers Arena after a six-game road trip on Friday, December 6, when they welcome the Columbus Blue Jackets to town.
