QB John Matocha signed with CFL team after tryout with Broncos

The NFL is filled with unlikely success stories. Tom Brady famously was drafted in the sixth round as the 199th pick, and San Francisco 49ers drafted their quarterback Brock Purdy with the last pick of the 2022 NFL draft.

Record-breaking quarterback John Matocha hopes to follow in their footsteps. After going undrafted last month, Matocha was invited to try out for the Denver Broncos at rookie minicamp.

Matocha attended Division II’s Colorado School of Mines and while there, he threw 162 touchdown passes in four seasons, setting an NCAA record. And while his three-day tryout didn’t end with a contract, Matocha undoubtedly gained valuable experience while in camp.

After the tryout, the rookie quarterback signed on with the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League. Toronto signed Matocha after losing quarterback Chad Kelly to a nine-game suspension.

Matocha will hope to one day return to the NFL, but for now, the record-breaking quarterback will attempt to make his mark in the CFL.
