The Pittsburgh Steelers heavily pursued wide receiver Chris Godwin in free agency this offseason before the star decided to head back to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Godwin signed a three-year, $66 million deal, but was reportedly offered over $30 million per season by the New England Patriots.
Dan Pompei of the Athletic revealed the Steelers had serious talks with Godwin and tried to land him as their star wide receiver.
“Four other teams wanted Godwin, with the Patriots and Steelers at the forefront, according to Godwin,” Pompei writes.
The Steelers must have felt Godwin was heading back to the Buccaneers, as they traded for DK Metcalf before the legal tampering period even opened.
Godwin suffered a dislocated ankle, which was a huge concern for anyone wanting to sign him. Still, he had a strong market.
That was due to his continued high level of play combined with the fact that he is only 28, which made him an attractive option for the Steelers and other franchises needing a top wide receiver.
Godwin, a Second-Team All-Pro in 2019 and Pro Bowler that year, was on pace for career highs before his ankle injury with the Buccaneers. Now, he will continue to play alongside Mike Evans in the place that drafted him out of Penn State.
