The Pittsburgh Steelers expect running back Jaylen Warren to return to the team next year. Warren, who is a restricted free agent, will be tendered, general manager Omar Khan said on Tuesday.
“I’m confident we’re going to tender him and be in a position where Jaylen is gonna be here,” Khan said.
It is unclear if they will place the second-round tender or original round tender on Warren. Still, the original round tender is $2 million less than the second-round tender, though it could make him more attainable to any team wanting to pursue him.
Coming off an injury-plagued season, it is unlikely a team would come in and sign Warren, but if they did, they could do the Steelers' bidding for themselves, which might lock Warren in on a long-term deal.
Warren dealt with multiple injuries last season. He strained his hamstring in the preseason but recovered in time to play in Week 1. Yet, he was clearly not healthy. Against the Los Angeles Chargers in Week 3, Warren suffered a PCL sprain that would keep him out for two weeks.
However, he finally got healthy down the stretch, outsnapping Najee Harris in five of the last six games. During that time, he averaged 4.7 yards per carry, returning to his old self.
