Pittsburgh Steelers could make big splash by landing former head coach for open assistant role

The Pittsburgh Steelers have a vacancy to fill on their coaching staff, with inside linebacker coach Aaron Curry leaving to head to the New York Jets to coach under Aaron Glenn. While Curry seems to be a young, rising coach, the Steelers do now have a chance to make a splash at this spot.

Jerod Mayo

The biggest coup for the Steelers might be former New England Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo. Mayo does not have a spot right now after the Patriots fired him, and it is not known what he would be looking for, but he was a top-notch linebackers coach with the Patriots before being elevated straight to head coach.

To be honest, the thought in bringing in Mayo is a little out there because it is a significant drop off, but this could be a similar arrangement to how the Steelers helped Brian Flores. He assumed the title of senior defensive assistant and linebackers coach, and Mayo is certainly qualified for that gig, too.

Mayo would likely be on the fast track back to being a defensive coordinator in that role, and that is something that he needs after such a disastrous first year as a head coach in New England.

Mayo and Mike Tomlin also have a pre-existing relationship with one another, so that could be an in for this to come to fruition.
