Philadelphia Eagles gift Packers a lifeline to land the pass-rusher they desperately need

Atlanta Falcons v Philadelphia Eagles

The Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles are seemingly OK watching talented pass-rushers walk out the door.

Josh Sweat and Milton Williams, two of Philly's top-three sack leaders in 2024, bolted for new opportunities in free agency. Eagles general manager Howie Roseman could allow another talented pass-rusher to walk out the door.

According to FOX Sports insider Jordan Schultz, the Eagles are "open to trade talks" about defensive end Bryce Huff.

It's only one year ago that Philadelphia handed Huff a three-year, $51.1 million deal to land the former New York Jets star. But Huff quickly fell out of favor for the Eagles, playing only 27.2 percent of their defensive snaps due to their incredible depth.

The Green Bay Packers need pass-rush help badly, and Brian Gutekunst should make a call to Roseman.

Bryce Huff could give Packers' pass rush the spark it needs to reach the next level

The Packers had rumored interest in free-agent edge-rusher Dante Fowler Jr. before he signed with the Dallas Cowboys. Gutekunst struck out in the first wave of free agency with limited options remaining. Unless he completely breaks tendencies to pry away Trey Hendrickson from the Cincinnati Bengals in a blockbuster trade, the Packers have nowhere to turn to find a veteran.

Huff's surprising availability would change that. While it's unclear what the Eagles would want in return, Huff could immediately help Jeff Hafley's defense.

Pro Football Focus credits him with an impressive 67 pressures and 10 sacks in his final season with the Jets, which helped him land a big-money deal with the Eagles.

Huff's run defense leaves a lot to be desired, but the Packers could find room for a designated pass-rusher to give the front seven the boost it needs.

Drafting a pass-rusher is a must for Gutekunst, regardless of whether the Packers can land a veteran. After two underwhelming seasons, Lukas Van Ness can't be relied upon to become a major contributor. If he makes a third-year jump, great, but it shouldn't be the expectation.

The Packers' interest in Fowler suggests they are open to adding a pass-rush specialist. At the right price, Huff could be the piece they need to begin to bolster the defensive front.
