During his four seasons at Alabama, defensive tackle Byron Young was teammates with four current members of the Philadelphia Eagles – guard Landon Dickerson, cornerback Eli Ricks, wide receiver DeVonta Smith and offensive tackle Tyler Steen.
On Thursday, Young became their teammate again on the Eagles.
Philadelphia was awarded Young as a waiver claim after he had been let go by the Las Vegas Raiders on Wednesday.
To create a spot for Young on their 53-man active roster, the Eagles waived defensive tackle Marlon Tuipulotu. Tuipulotu had been listed as the backup to Jordan Davis at defensive tackle on Philadelphia’s depth chart.
Young survived the Raiders’ initial roster reduction from the preseason size to the regular-season limit on Tuesday. But when Las Vegas was awarded defensive back Thomas Harper and defensive tackle Jonah Laulu as waiver claims on Wednesday, Young was one of the players waived by the Raiders to make room for the new players.
Young had joined Las Vegas last season as a third-round draft choice, but the No. 70 pick didn’t play much as a rookie.
Young appeared in six games and was on the field for 99 defensive snaps and 13 special-teams plays. He recorded four tackles in 2023.
During the Raiders’ three preseason games this month, Young played 83 defensive snaps. He made three tackles, recorded one sack and broke up one pass.
Philadelphia has one other Alabama alumnus on its roster, but quarterback Jalen Hurts did not play with Young on the Crimson Tide.
