It’s the second week of May, and the duo of Pete Carroll and John Spytek aren’t done adding veterans to the Las Vegas Raiders’ roster–not by a long shot. On Sunday, Carroll and Spytek welcomed two new players to Sin City: linebacker Jaylon Smith and safety Jonathan Sutherland.
Both come with connections to their new team, too.
For eight-year veteran Jaylon Smith, that connection is directly with the Raiders organization itself. Sin City was the 29-year-old’s last NFL stop, signing with the team during his ’23 campaign.
Over the course of his pro career, Smith has accumulated 626 combined tackles over 88 contests. 373 have been solo, and 24 have been behind the line of scrimmage. 11 have been quarterback sacks.
After a weekend tryout, Smith rejoins the team he last suited up for. Along with Sutherland, who also earned an official deal with the Silver and Black.
For Sutherland, his connection with the team lies in Pete Carroll. An undrafted free agent in the 2023 NFL Draft, Sutherland signed with the Seahawks, playing under Carroll in Seattle.
During the ’23 preseason, Sutherland took 106 total snaps–32 in the box, 57 in the slot, and seven at deep safety. His grade via Pro Football Focus in coverage, as a pass-rusher, as a tackler and against the run were each north of 70.
Up to this point, the Penn State alum has yet to see action during the regular season. He’ll compete with Thomas Harper, Lonnie Johnson, Trey Taylor and Chris Smith for run at the safety position once Week 1 rolls around.
