Paul Pierce urges Damian Lillard to become a backup point guard on the Boston Celtics

Ahead of the 2025-26 NBA season, the Celtics have blown up their core as they traded away Jrue Holiday and Kristaps Porzingis.

With Jayson Tatum likely out for the season, it’s tough to see the Celtics competing for an NBA title this season. That stance could change if someone of Dame’s caliber joins the team.

However, Pierce doesn’t think that the 34-year-old should ask for a starting point guard role on the 2024 NBA champions.

“I truly believe Dame may be coming back to a backup situation with the way the league is going. He’s more of a shooter at this stage of his career,” Pierce said on FOX Sports’ SPEAK.

He added: “I would love to see him on the Celtics as a backup point guard. Give us some depth. Dame is so great, it’s hard to see him going down that way. He could have a couple more years.”

As things stand right now, Derrick White and Anfernee Simons are expected to be the Celtics’ backcourt for the upcoming season.

Considering Lillard averaged 24.9 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 7.1 assists per game last season, it would be surprising if he agreed to a bench role.

What’s next for Damian Lillard?

One key thing to keep in mind about Lillard is the fact that he is currently recovering from a torn Achilles tendon injury.

It is often considered a career-altering injury, but even then, the 9x NBA All-Star made a ‘jackpot’ statement about his potential suitors.

It can be interpreted as Lillard believing he’s still an All-Star caliber player, and any team that signs him will increase their chances of competing for the 2026 NBA Championship.

While Lillard to Celtics and Lakers rumors continue to surface, Jeff Teague wants Dame’s return to the Portland Trail Blazers.

Although the Trail Blazers are currently not a championship contender, Teague believes the move will help Lillard recover better and extend his NBA career.
