As New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel's staff officially crystalized on Wednesday, a surprisingly familiar name stood out amid the changes.
Deron Mayo, the brother of former Patriots head coach Jerod Mayo, will stay on the coaching staff as the head strength and conditioning coach.
Mayo only lasted one season at the helm for the Patriots before being fired after the 2024 regular season amid a 4-13 record.
From 2018 to 2023, Deron had been the assistant strength and conditioning coach under Moses Cabrera before the move up in 2024.
Similar to Jerod, Deron spent time in professional football as a player, mostly in the CFL with the Calgary Stampeders from 2012 to 2017.
Besides Deron, Vrabel only kept three other coaches from the 2024 staff: senior defensive assistant Ben McAdoo, special teams assistant Tom Quinn, and special teams coordinator Jeremy Springer.
Vrabel brought in 11 coaches from his tenure with the Tennessee Titans as head coach between 2018 and 2023. That includes defensive coordinator Terrell Williams and Vice President of Football Operations John Streicher, to name a few.
"The goal in filling out the 2025 Patriots coaching staff was to identify loyal, trustworthy coaches who are diverse in background, ideas, experiences and systems," Vrabel said in a statement via Patriots.com.
"We will be aligned in our vision to teach and develop our players with creativity, consistency and an attention to detail with the major goal of developing relationships that stretch beyond the field and meeting rooms."
