Patriots All-Pro Gets Encouraging Boost On Hamstring Injury

The New England Patriots could have one of the sneaky best secondaries in the NFL next season.

New England Patriots All-Pro cornerback, Christian Gonzalez, smiling during practicing at training camp on July 28, 2025.

Former Super Bowl champion, Carlton Davis, signed a three year, $54 million deal in free agency with the Patriots, and he joins Kyle Dugger, Jabril Peppers, Marcus Jones and All-Pro, Christian Gonzalez in what is one of the more a highly-compensated, star-studded units at corner and safety in the league.

But Patriots got a brutal sight on Monday, when Gonzalez was seen limping off the field – and many feared the worst.

However, per Jordan Schultz, Gonzalez will not be missing for an extended period of time, and should be back prior to the start of the regular season in early September.

How Long Will Christian Gonzalez Be Out For?

Gonzalez is believed to have suffered a grade 1 hamstring injury, according to some unverified accounts on X, which if true will keep him out for a week or two, approximately 7-14 days.

Given that the report from Schultz implied a certain level of confidence that the 2023 first round pick would be back by Week 1, it is most probably a grade 1 strain, as a grade 2 pull could have seen Gonzalez remain on the sidelines for up to a month – putting his Week 1 availability at risk.

This certainly is not a make-or-break situation for either the former Oregon man or the Patriots secondary, but considering that the risk of re-injury over the course of the next month is high, both Gonzalez and the training staff will have to be cognizant of taking adequate precautions to avoid a longer-term absence for their CB1.

What Is The Patriots Defense Shaping Up To Look Like?

Numerous free agent acquisitions on all three levels of the defense, including Milton Williams, Harold Landry, Robert Spillane and Davis will help improve a unit that ranked 21st in the league last season.

Perhaps a more important focus will be on the team’s passing defense. Specifically, the amount of pressure the defensive line is able to put on opposing quarterbacks.

The Patriots ranked dead last in sacks – and whilst Williams, Landry and the return of the formerly injured Christian Barmore will no doubt help the team get to the QB, maybe the tandem of Gonzalez and Davis at corner will work similar wonders.

Adding higher end coverage on the back end will allow the defensive line more time to get home and keep the quarterback’s eyes firmly downfield.

In head coach, Mike Vrabel’s first year on the job, this is hardly a must-win, all-in season for New England, especially coming off a dismal four-win season last year. But owner Robert Kraft- and indeed the fans – will certainly be looking for major improvements on both sides of the ball in 2025.
