Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes has updated his Instagram profile picture to showcase his Super Bowl rings as he sets his sights on a historic three-peat.
The defending Super Bowl champion, who welcomed his third child with wife Brittany on Monday, is aiming to lift the Vince Lombardi Trophy for the fourth time in his career.
His first victory came in February 2020 when he led the Chiefs to triumph over the San Francisco 49ers, marking the team as a consistent threat. Despite subsequent losses to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in Super Bowl LV and the Cincinnati Bengals in the AFC Championship, Mahomes and his team bounced back to defeat the Philadelphia Eagles in a high-scoring thriller.
They then outlasted the 49ers once more in February this year at Allegiant Stadium, winning the second Super Bowl to ever go into overtime. With their victory over the 49ers, Mahomes and the Chiefs became the first team to win back-to-back Super Bowls since Tom Brady's New England Patriots in 2004-2005.
Now, the AFC West franchise is aiming to make history by achieving the first-ever three-peat.
Ahead of the Chiefs' first postseason game, the 29-year-old Mahomes gave fans a glimpse of his ambition - and a reminder of his past successes - by changing his Instagram photo to one showing his hand adorned with his three Super Bowl rings.
On Christmas Day, the Chiefs secured a decisive 29-10 victory over the Pittsburgh Steelers, clinching the No. 1 seed in the AFC and their ninth consecutive AFC West title.
This win ensured the reigning back-to-back champions would enjoy home-field advantage throughout the postseason, allowing them to take some time off to reset and focus on making NFL history. With the path to Super Bowl LIX running through Arrowhead Stadium, the Chiefs were able to rest their starters for the Week 18 trip to Denver and enjoy a bye during Super Wild Card weekend.
The team is likely to feel rejuvenated against the Houston Texans, with Mahomes fully rested and his high ankle sprain concerns put to rest. Now, only the Texans stand between the Chiefs and another AFC Championship. If successful, it would be the franchise's seventh consecutive AFC title game; the Chiefs have reached this stage every year Mahomes has started, winning four times. The Chiefs will host the Texans at Arrowhead Stadium in the Divisional Round of the NFL playoffs on Saturday, Jan. 18.
