Packers Urged to Sign Former Top 10 Pick as Jordan Love Fill-In

The Green Bay Packers are still navigating their options at quarterback following Jordan Love's knee injury.

With uncertainty looming, an experienced former Pro Bowler could provide some veteran leadership and stability if Love's recovery takes longer than expected.

Love sustained a sprained MCL in the final seconds of the Packers' Week 1 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. He signed a four-year, $220 million extension with Green Bay this offseason, putting him among the top-paid passers in the league.

According to NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, the Packers do not plan to put Love on injured reserve and expect him back at the early end of the original 3-to-6-week timeline.

If Love can't suit up, the Packers are set to rely on Malik Willis, whom they traded for right before the season opener. Expectations are modest for the 2022 third-round pick as he steps into the backup role. Sean Clifford is next on the depth chart.

Bleacher Report's article on free agent signings "that should happen" pointed to Ryan Tannehill as a strong option for the Packers.

"The Packers really can't afford to roll with Willis and Sean Clifford for multiple weeks, and Ryan Tannehill is the best option available on the open market," Bleacher Report's Brad Gagnon said. "The 36-year-old put up elite numbers just a few years ago and has tons of experience compared to Willis and Clifford, who have a combined zero career touchdown passes to three interceptions."

Tannehill has an 81-70 career record as a starting quarterback, splitting time with the Miami Dolphins and Tennessee Titans. He played in just eight games a season ago, passing for 1,616 yards, four touchdowns and seven interceptions.

The Packers have not ruled out Love for Week 2, although it's highly unlikely he will suit up.
