Packers Rumors: Should Consider Former Miami Dolphins Backup Quarterback

The Green Bay Packers must trim the roster to 53 players by Tuesday at 3 p.m. CT. One of the biggest issues for the Packers will be deciding who the backup for Jordan Love will be. Michael Pratt and Sean Clifford competed for the backup job in training camp,

It will be interesting to see if either of them wins the job. The Miami Dolphins and other NFL teams have already started to cut players before the deadline.

The Miami Dolphins Cut Mike White And the Green Bay Packers Should Consider Him

On Sunday, the Dolphins cut quarterback Mike White. This move for Miami leaves Tua Tagovailoa and Skylar Thompson as the only quarterbacks on the Dolphins roster. There could be a chance that Green Bay decides to cut both Michael Pratt and Sean Clifford.

If the Green Bay Packers were to make that move, it would leave Jordan Love as the only quarterback on the roster. This would mean Green Bay would have to sign someone else or they could make the risky move and keep only one quarterback on the roster.

Freddie Boston of lombardiavenue.com thinks that the Green Bay Packers should pursue Mike White as a potential backup quarterback option. Boston said:

“Mike White isn’t exactly a game-changer at the quarterback position, but none of the available quarterbacks are. White lost out on the Dolphins’ backup quarterback job after a stellar performance from Skylar Thompson in their final preseason game.

White is a backup for a reason, but there are reasons why a move to Green Bay would make sense.

He has experience in Mike McDaniel’s system, which shares similarities to Matt LaFleur’s. There likely wouldn’t be much of an adjustment period.

White also has NFL experience, something the Packers’ current backups lack—Clifford has thrown one regular-season pass and Pratt is a rookie. White has been in the league for longer and started seven career games, throwing for 2,219 yards, nine touchdowns, and 13 interceptions.

Again, they are hardly MVP numbers, but the Packers aren’t going to find a player on Jordan Love’s level on the waiver wire.”

There will be many options that the Packers could also consider other than Mike White if they don’t keep Clifford and Pratt on the roster.

Taylor Heinicke Could Be Another Option

The Atlanta Falcons have an interesting quarterback situation. Kirk Cousins is projected to be the stater and rookie Michael Penix Jr. is the backup quarterback. What if Atlanta decides to cut Taylor Heinicke from the team?

Heinicke would be a reliable backup option for the Green Bay Packers. He has started and won games in the league with the Washington Commanders in the past.
