The Green Bay Packers may be heading to the NFL Playoffs for the second year in a row, but many fans are not feeling optimistic. Green Bay lost their last two regular season games, both to division rivals, and fell to 1-5 against NFC North this season.
What is more, the Packers could have increased their seeding if they had beaten the Minnesota Vikings in Week 17. As it stands, they face the reality of going on the road to play the 14-3 Philadelphia Eagles in the Wild Card Round.
Due to Green Bay’s stumble to the finish line to end the regular season, as well the their irritating tendency to start games slow, many fans have began to wonder if head coach Matt LaFleur might be on the hot seat.
After the Packers lost to the Chicago Bears in Week 18, fans were livid with LaFleur. Forgotten was the fact that it was first loss to the Bears in his tenure as head coach. The Wild Card matchup with the Eagles, in the minds of many fans, is already lost.
Obviously, these fans have also forgotten, or not realized, that LaFleur has now taken the youngest team in the NFL to the postseason two years in a row. This year’s squad is the second-youngest team ever to make the NFL Playoffs.
Only last year’s Packers team was younger.
One of Green Bay’s biggest supporters over the years has been one of their former wide receivers, James Jones. Now an NFL analyst, Jones frequently defended the Packers when they made the decision to move on from Aaron Rodgers, his former teammate.
And he is now defending his former team’s head coach:
Jones, who never played for LaFleur, is obviously a big fan of the job that he has done since taking over the Packers.
While it is true that a 1-5 division record and frequent mistakes are less than ideal, the argument can easily be made that LaFleur has taken this team to a higher level quicker than most head coaches could.
