Green Bay Packers backup quarterback Sean Clifford has been taking reps with the first team because quarterback Jordan Love is not practicing because he does not have a new contract yet. Clifford was a rookie last season and went to Penn State. He was a fifth-round selection in the 2023 NFL Draft. However, he is facing competition for the backup quarterback spot this season and he is competing with Michael Pratt from Tulane. Pratt was a seventh-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

Sean Clifford is on the roster for now but we will see if he makes it by the end of NFL training camp. Clifford spoke to Paul Breti of ESPN La Crosse 105.5 FM and said:

“No nerves. Football’s football. I’m just excited to be out there. I felt in OTAs I was really trying to be a little bit more aggressive and see what I can and can’t do. I think y’all saw that in minicamp, I threw too many interceptions. Now it’s all about getting back to the basics and checking the ball down when I need to and being a smart quarterback.”

Last season, it was a slam dunk that Clifford would make the Packers roster because it was just him and Jordan Love. This training camp, Sean Clifford has to prove he belongs on the roster as they are most likely only going to keep two quarterbacks on the roster once again. Clifford struggled during OTAs and many thought that Michael Pratt could eventually get a jump on him, but neither has performed well so far in training camp.

When Jordan Love signs his contract, Clifford will be able to focus on competing with Michael Pratt for the backup quarterback job. The Green Bay Packers will most likely not keep Jacob Eason around once they do so. They brought in Eason just to have an extra body around with Love currently sidelined for now. However, if Clifford and Pratt both struggle once Love returns, should the Packers pivot from him and Michael Pratt for a more proven backup quarterback like Ryan Tannehill or somebody else?

It remains to be seen how well Sean Clifford will do, but it does not look promising. He can say the right things to the media, but the Packers fanbase knows that they will need a different backup quarterback behind Jordan Love in case anything happens to him.
