The Green Bay Packers made some massive changes to the running back room this offseason. Aaron Jones was released after being with the franchise for several seasons. When Jones was released, he signed with the Minnesota Vikings
The Packers also signed running back Josh Jacobs this offseason. He played with the Las Vegas Raiders throughout his NFL career before signing with Green Bay. Another move that Green Bay made this offseason was drafting Marshawn Lloyd in the third round of the 2024 NFL Draft.
Lloyd has a chance to make noise in this offense during his rookie season. The Green Bay Packers depth chart for the running backs for this season could be Josh Jacobs, A.J. Dillon, Marshawn Lloyd, and Emmanuel Wilson.
Green Bay Packers Running Back AJ Dillon Could Be In His Final Season With the Team
Dillon could be in his final season with the Packers after signing a one-year deal in the offseason to comeback. It was a shock when he re-signed with the team because many thought Dillon was not going to return.
When the Green Bay Packers signed Josh Jacobs this offseason, many thought Aaron Jones and Josh Jacobs were going to be the tandem, but they had other plans. Jacobs is an upgrade to Jones.
Sayre Bedinger of lombardiavenue.com thinks that Green Bay Packers running back A.J. Dillon could very well be in his final season with the team. Bedinger said:
“As good as he looks this offseason (and he does look good), it’s hard to envision a future for AJ Dillon with the Green Bay Packers beyond the 2024 season. In fact, it’s still a little tough to envision what his role is going to be in 2024 given the fact that offensive coordinator Adam Stenavich has stated the Packers want to get rookie MarShawn Lloyd involved right away.
We’ll see what happens.
But Dillon is a former second-round pick who could parlay a strong preseason into a RB1 or RB2 role elsewhere, maybe even before the 2024 season begins. He’s a big, strong back who had a real shot last year to cement himself as a possible RB1 in Green Bay with how long Aaron Jones spent injured, but he couldn’t seize the role. The additions of Josh Jacobs and MarShawn Lloyd have put Dillon’s standing with the Packers — beyond 2024 — in serious question.”
Dillon enters training camp as the number two running back behind Josh Jacobs on the Green Bay Packers depth chart. It would not be a surprise to see rookie Marshawn Lloyd outplay him during the season.
Last season, A.J. Dillon rushed for 613 yards on 178 carries and two touchdowns, along with averaging 3.4 yards per rush. A.J. Dillon also caught 22 passes for 223 yards receiving and zero touchdowns, along with averaging 10.1 yards per reception.
