The Green Bay Packers have accomplished just about everything they set out to do during the offseason. Head coach Matt LaFleur made the long-expected and long-awaited decision to fire defensive coordinator Joe Barry. In his place, LaFleur hired former Boston College head coach Jeff Hafley, who has brought a new life to the defense and has players buzzing in a way that has not been seen on that side of the ball for quite some time.
Green Bay also has improved their roster in a variety of ways. They allowed all of their veteran safeties to hit the market as free agents and signed former New York Giants star Xavier McKinney to lead the position group on their team. They also selected three new safeties in the 2024 NFL Draft, ensuring that they will have a plethora of young talent at the position for years to come.
Some changes that the team had to make were not as pleasant. Bidding farewell to fan-favorites Aaron Jones and David Bakhtiari was necessary, but nonetheless unfortunate. They replaced those long-time Packers with free agent Josh Jacobs and some great young talent from the draft.
Now, just one thing remains: extend Jordan Love.
Green Bay Packers Quarterback Jordan Love Will Get a Contract Extension This Summer
As Packers fans remember well, the decision to trade Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets was met with some trepidation. Drafting Love in the first place was a highly unpopular move among the fans, and no one was quite sure what to expect from the 2020 first round pick.
Fortunately for everyone, Love was better than most people expected. He ended the season with a 64.1% completion percentage, 4,159 passing yards, 32 touchdowns, 11 interceptions, and a 96.1 passer rating. In other words, he proved to everyone, including the Packers organization, that he was indeed their quarterback of the future.
The thing about being the quarterback of the future, though, is that one needs to be under contract for that future. Prior to last season, Green Bay bought out Love’s fifth-year option and gave him a two-year contract that covered last year and this one. However, now that he is an established NFL quarterback, the Packers need to lock him up long-term.
NFL Insider Says Green Bay Packers Quarterback Jordan Love Could Get More than Jacksonville Jaguars Star Trevor Lawrence
Last week, the Jacksonville Jaguars gave their young quarterback, Trevor Lawrence, a five-year $275 million contract extension. His $55 million annual salary is tied for the highest in the NFL with Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow. Prior to his extension, the Detroit Lions had given Jared Goff a four-year deal worth $212 million, or $53 million per year.
Appearing on ESPN Milwaukee this morning, NFL insider Adam Schefter dropped a massive (and expensive) take on what the Packers will probably end up playing Love:
If that ends up being the case, Love will end up as the NFL’s highest-paid quarterback. That is, at least, until Dak Prescott signs his upcoming extension with the Dallas Cowboys.
