Packers News: NFL Analysts Explains Why Jordan Love Will Be a “Top-Tier” NFL Quarterback in 2024

The Green Bay Packers may have done it again. After 30 consecutive years of Hall of Fame quarterback play from Brett Favre and Aaron Rodgers, there were some questions about whether or not Jordan Love would be able to live up to the standard set for Packers signal callers. However, Love turned out to be better than most people could have hoped for, turning in the best season by a first year starting quarterback in Packers history.

Quarterback Completion % Yards Touchdowns Interceptions Passer Rating
Jordan Love 64.2% 4,159 32 11 96.1
Aaron Rodgers 63.6% 4,038 28 13 93.8
Brett Favre 64.1% 3,227 18 13 85.3

Having established himself as the future of the franchise, Love is now in line for a massive contract extension that could make him one of the highest-paid players in the NFL. There is no question that he will get that contract. In fact, both Love and the Packers’ front office have stated that their hope is to have a deal done by the start of training camp on July 22.

As far as how well he will perform in the future, one NFL analyst believes his production will match his upcoming contract: among the highest in the league.

It is no secret that Love got off to a slow start in 2023. The rest of the Packers did too. However, Love was one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL in the second half of the season, as noted by Ted Nguyen of The Athletic (via Yardbarker):

“Love threw for 32 touchdowns and, according to Pro Football Focus, his turnover-worthy play rate was the 29th-lowest among qualifying quarterbacks (2.6 percent),” Nguyen explained. “…In the last quarter of the season, he looked completely comfortable in his process pre- and post-snap. In Weeks 10-18, Love ranked second in expected points added (EPA) per dropback on throws without play action.

“Though a quarterback’s stats under pressure could be volatile from season to season, it’s a good sign that Love ranked seventh in EPA per dropback with pressure in his first season as a starter,” Nguyen continued. “…He ranked second in EPA per dropback in Weeks 10-18 on throws under 2.5 seconds. He was one of the best quick-game throwers in the league.”

As noted above, Love was the second-best quarterback in the entire NFL in EPA per dropback in Weeks 10-18. He finished the season seventh overall.

In other words, Love was arguably a top-ten quarterback in his first season as a starter.

What Should the Green Bay Packers Expect from Jordan Love in 2024?

As mentioned earlier, Love and the Packers got off to a slow start in 2023. A great deal of that had to do with the young offense’s inexperience mixed in with injuries to crucial players.

While injuries are going to happen, Green Bay has shied away from using them as an excuse for poor play. What they can, and did, control was the need for their players to get experience. Instead of benching players when they struggled, they allowed them to play through it.

They were rewarded by a strong second half from the offense, and Love in particular. Going forward, though, that level of second half play is what will be expected from him.
