In the latest Green Bay Packers news, Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan Love hinted on Tuesday that his next contract extension might be in place and ready to go by the time the team reports for training camp at the end of July. Jordan Love talked with the Associated Press Tuesday and had this to say:

Love, who is currently eligible to sign a long-term extension, indicated that his agent has kept him in the loop on recent negotiation news and that he has reason to be encouraged and optimistic about the process. Things could potentially heat up once the Packers minicamp is completed and over with. Last week, Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst expressed similar optimism saying:

“We’d like to get this done before training camp begins for sure. Both parties want to a contract extension done.”

Jordan Love Showing Up And Showing Out For OTAs

Jordan Love has been a regular participant at Packers OTAs, which has won him favor among his teammates and coaches. Also helping his case was his amazing breakout season last year in 2023, when Love broke out of the shadow of Aaron Rodgers, and finished with 4,159 passing yards and 32 touchdown passes numbers Aaron Rodgers didn’t even reach until his second and fourth starting seasons with the Pack.

Even after all of the progress Jordan Love made last season, Love said he has plenty more to work on and clean up. Adding to Love’s slow start, he also ended his season in disappointing fashion, throwing two fourth-quarter interceptions in the Divisional Round loss to the San Francisco 49ers. He had this to say on Tuesday about the few areas of improvement he’s targeted over the offseason:

“The main thing for me is understanding where to go with the ball, always making the right decision, not forcing the ball downfield and trying to fit it in certain windows, things like that. Just process, and understanding where I need to go with the ball, and then pocket movement, making smaller movements in the pocket, not being so quick to try and get out of there, but to stay in the pocket and try to find those receivers downfield. That’s something I’ve been working on. Also throwing on the move, going right, being able to get my shoulders downhill, my body downhill and not be drifting away from the throw.”

Assuming a deal gets done, this will be Love’s second extension with the Packers after picking up the fifth-year option and signing a one-year extension that included $13.5 million guaranteed. A year has now passed since that deal, so Jordan Love is free to sign a new deal any day now.

The Tricky Timing Of Signing A Player In The Highly Completive QB Market

Now, there’s the NFL landscape to consider following Jared Goff’s recent deal that completely reset the QB market. There are other young quarterbacks in addition to Love who are also waiting for a new contract including, Dak Prescott, Tua Tagovailoa, and Trevor Lawrence. The timing and order of these deals will be fascinating. For agents, sometimes getting deals done early can leave money on the table, but if a new quarterback extension is bigger than expected, it can set the two sides back.

All signs point to the Packers’ continued success at quarterback continuing. Love still has much to prove, and no deal is yet done. But the Packers clearly believe in the man they handpicked to be Aaron Rodgers’s eventual replacement, patiently developing him behind the scenes. Love also clearly believes a contract is in the works to keep him in Green Bay for a little while longer.
