The Green Bay Packers have started training camp as they prepare for the 2024 NFL season. As was reported earlier today, franchise quarterback Jordan Love is present and participating in team meetings. However, he is refusing to practice until he and the Packers agree on their long-negotiated contract extension. Both he and the Packers had hoped to have a deal done by the start of training camp, but more time is needed.

The Packers are also without several players that are not practicing due to injuries. While offensive lineman Zach Tom returned from the physically unable to perform (PUP) list, tight end Tucker Kraft remained out. Both players suffered torn pectoral muscles during the offseason.

Green Bay also had three players listed on the non-football injury list (NFI). These players, Jayden Reed, Corey Ballentine, and Caleb Jones were all unable to practice today.

It was not initially known what happened to Reed to cause his placement on the NFI. After all, the most anyone heard of him during the offseason was that he and fellow second-year wide receiver Dontayvion Wicks rented a house down in Florida for a couple of months so that they could train together.

As it turns out, Reed suffered his toe injury during his youth football camp. Per Matt Schneidman of The Athletic:

Schneidman also reported at that Reed said his injury is “nothing to worry about.”

The Packers do not start practicing with pads until the end of the week. Hopefully that is the target for Reed to return to the practice field.

The Packers selected Reed in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft with the 50th overall pick. A day-one starter for Green Bay, Reed led the team with 64 receptions and 793 receiving yards. He also tied Romeo Doubs for the team-lead in touchdown receptions with eight.

Reed’s 64 receptions broke Sterling Sharpe’s record for receptions by a rookie wide receiver, which he set back in 1988.

Incredibly, Reed did not have his first 100-yard receiving game until Week 18 against the Chicago Bears. In that contest, he had four receptions for 112 yards. The week previously, he had six receptions for 89 yards and two touchdowns against the Minnesota Vikings.

Green Bay needed to win both games in order to make the playoffs.
