The first three weeks of the 2024 NFL season have a lot of surprises for and from the Green Bay Packers. One positive surprise for the Packers, as noted by Rob Demovsky of ESPN, is the emergence of an unheralded weapon in the backfield in the form of running back Emmanuel Wilson.
Demovsky was impressed with how Wilson performed for the Packers, particularly in the team’s Week 30-14 victory on the road where he finished behind lead running back Josh Jacobs in terms of carries. Wilson collected 50 rushing yards on 12 rushing attempts. But it was through the air where he made a bigger impact, as he caught both targets from Malik Willis for 35 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Most surprising performance: RB Emanuel Wilson. He might not have made the Packers’ opening day roster if not for injuries to AJ Dillon and MarShawn Lloyd. Now, as Josh Jacobs’ backup, Wilson keeps making plays, taking a screen pass 30 yards for a touchdown in the third quarter. He totaled 85 yards from scrimmage on 14 touches for the game.

As Demovsky mentioned, Lloyd is on the injured reserve, and that opens up a golden opportunity for Wils
on to shine as the chief insurance for Jacobs. Perhaps it is still too early to expect Wilson to have the same performance on a weekly basis, but at least he’s shown signs of life for a team that needs all hands on deck, especially while Jordan Love is sidelined with an injury.
Wilson went undrafted in 2023 but was signed by the Denver Broncos in the same year. He later found his way to Green Bay in May 2023 and is now in his second season with the NFC North division franchise.
