The Green Bay Packers don’t have a quandary when it comes to their expected starters in the backfield in the 2025 NFL season.
Jordan Love is going to be their starting quarterback and Josh Jacobs will be the team’s RB1. Unless an injury gets in the way, Love and Jacobs will be there to start for the team come Week 1 of the 2025 campaign against the Detroit Lions at Lambeau Field in Green Bay.
However, there will be an intriguing backfield battle in the upcoming Packers training camp, particularly concerning the RB2 role behind Jacobs.
Emanuel Wilson may have the edge at the moment, as he was the second-most productive Green Bay running back in 2024, but MarShawn Lloyd can be expected to make a push for the job as well.
Green Bay Packers RB2 battle is on the horizon

Zach Kruse of Packers Wire named Wilson and Lloyd as the chief contenders for one of the most important positional battles in Green Bay training camp,
Wrote Kruse: “Wilson handled 114 touches in 2024, ranking second behind only Josh Jacobs for the Packers last season. The No. 2 running back spot in Matt LaFleur’s offense matters. A lot. Wilson was incredibly efficient with his opportunities, averaging 4.9 yards per carry with a success rate of 59.9. But Lloyd was a third-round pick in 2024 and offers an enticing blend of explosiveness and dual-threat playmaking ability, so this is a true camp battle. Can Wilson take another developmental step and keep his role? Or will Lloyd prove too talented to keep off the field?”
There is still a lot to learn for the Packers about Lloyd, as an ankle injury and a midseason surgery held him to just a game in his rookie season. Now healthy, the former USC Trojans star, who was taken in the third round of the 2024 NFL draft by Green Bay, could end up winning the RB2 role, depending on how the training camp and the preseason shape up.
