Packers’ Matthew Golden Draws Comparison to 103-Touchdown All-Pro

The Green Bay Packers clearly believe that rookie wide receiver Matthew Golden is special.

After all, Golden became the first wide receiver chosen by the Packers in the first round of the NFL Draft since taking Javon Walker back in 2002.

It remains to be seen just how impactful Golden’s electrifying 4.29 speed will be on the Packers’ offense, but the opportunity is there for the former University of Texas standout to steal a starting job and perhaps vault to the top of the depth chart during training camp this summer.

At least one NFL analyst believes Golden has the potential to develop into the next Davante Adams.

Fox Sports NFL analyst Rob Rang put together a list of players that this year’s crop of incoming first-round rookies reminds him of, including Cooper potentially following in Adams’ footsteps.

“With all due respect to the current Packers’ receiving corps,” Rang writes for Fox Sports. “No one truly stepped up to replace Davante Adams’ production, leaving a massive target share potentially available for Golden to exploit. The fastest offensive player at this year’s combine, Golden has the 4.29-second speed to take full advantage of Jordan Love’s big arm and defenses crowding the line of scrimmage to slow Josh Jacobs.”

Adams spent the first eight seasons of his career in Green Bay, and has logged 987 receptions for 11,844 yards with 103 touchdowns for the Packers, Las Vegas Raiders, and Jets ahead of opening the 2025 season with the Los Angeles Rams.

The Packers have struggled mightily both replacing Adams’ production and seeing a legitimate game-altering weapon emerge at receiver, despite Jordan Love’s rapid development into one of the top quarterbacks in the sport.

Golden’s speed, arriving in Green Bay after catching 58 passes for 987 yards and nine touchdowns while averaging a career-high 17 yards per reception may be the Packers’ best chance yet.
