The Green Bay Packers are preparing to take the next step towards their return as serious contenders in the NFL this upcoming season. Last year at this time, there were a plethora of questions surrounding both the short-term and long-term futures of the team. This was because, of course, the Packers had traded Aaron Rodgers to the New York Jets in order to hand the keys of the offense over to Jordan Love.
At the time, many people, including a good proportion of Packers fans, had serious doubts about whether or not Jordan Love would be a successful NFL quarterback. For the first few weeks of the 2023 season, it looked like people were right to have their doubts. Green Bay started 2-5 and, while Love showed glimpses, he lacked consistency (as did the rest of the offense).
However, Love and the Packers started to click midway through the season. They won seven of their final 10 games, finished 9-8, and upset the second-seeded Dallas Cowboys in the Wild Card Round of the NFL Playoffs. When it was all said and done, Love had the best first season as a starting quarterback in franchise history.
Quarterback | Completion % | Yards | Touchdowns | Interceptions | Passer Rating |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Jordan Love | 64.2% | 4,159 | 32 | 11 | 96.1 |
Aaron Rodgers | 63.6% | 4,038 | 28 | 13 | 93.8 |
Brett Favre | 64.1% | 3,227 | 18 | 13 | 85.3 |
Jordan Love Proved He Is the Future for the Green Bay Packers
Not only was Love the best first-year starting quarterback in Packers franchise history, he was also a top-10 quarterback in the NFL last season. He ranked seventh in passing yards, second in touchdown passes, 11th in passer rating, and ninth in QBR.
Since Love and his young core of pass catchers are only going to get better as time goes on, it stands to reason that Green Bay’s starting quarterback will produce even more in 2024.
Off the field, too, Love has shown that he is exactly the kind of person the Packers want as the face of their organization. He has now taken over as the host of the famous Donald Driver Celebrity Softball Game and, despite being in contract negotiations with the front office, has been at every offseason workout.
Brian Gutekunst Says the Green Bay Packers and Jordan Love Will Have a Contract Extension Done Soon
Speaking on 97.3 The Game recently, Packers general manager Brian Gutekunst told fans that they will not have to wait long for Love’s contract extension to be announced. He said that both sides are very motivated to get a deal done before training camp:
During OTA’s Love was asked if he would report to training camp or even play in 2024 without a new deal. He said that he did not know and that he was not really thinking about it.
It doesn’t sound like it will be an issue.
