The Green Bay Packers begin training camp today with a singular goal in mind: compete for and win the Super Bowl. In order to do that, of course, they first need to correct the issues that plagued the team last year, such as an inconsistent pass rush and numerous dropped passes by their wide receivers.
They also will need several of their young players to take steps forward in their development and avoid their stars getting seriously injured.
As training camp kicks off, there are roughly 90 players on Green Bay’s roster that will vie for a job this upcoming season, but only 53 will make it.
The Contenders: Jordan Love, Malik Willis, Sean Clifford, Taylor Elgersma
Prediction: Love and Willis
There will be no change at the quarterback position, at least regarding the two that will make the 53-man roster. Love and Willis will lead the way again, and hopefully Green Bay’s starter can avoid injury this season and fans see less of Willis than they did last season.
The real question at the quarterback position is who will be the practice squad quarterback, and it does seem probable that Elgersma outduels Clifford for that role.
The Contenders: Josh Jacobs, Emanuel Wilson, Marshawn Lloyd, Chris Brooks, Amar Johnson, Jalen White
Prediction: Jacobs, Lloyd, Wilson
Josh Jacobs is a lock to be the starter again after being one of the best running backs in the NFL last year. Wilson, too, played well as the team’s primary backup at the position. Lloyd missed virtually the whole season with a long list of injuries, but is healthy and will be back in 2025. His status as a former third-round pick locks him up for Green Bay’s third running back role.
The Contenders: Christian Watson, Romeo Doubs, Jayden Reed, Dontayvion Wicks, Malik Heath, Bo Melton, Mecole Hardman, Matthew Golden, Savion Williams, Julian Hicks, Cornelius Johnson, Sam Brown, Will Sheppard
Prediction: Doubs, Reed, Wicks, Golden, Williams, Heath
There is no need to over-think this one. While many speculate the Doubs is a trade candidate, and his social media posting has not helped dispel that narrative, the fact remains is targeted more frequently by Love than any wide receiver on their roster.
Reed and Wicks are locks, as are 2025 top-100 draft picks Golden and Williams. With Watson likely starting the season on the PUP list, the real question is who will get the last spot, and Heath has earned that role in each of the past two seasons.
The Contenders: Tucker Kraft, Luke Musgrave, Ben Sims, Messiah Swinson, Johnny Lumpkin, John Fitzpatrick
Prediction: Kraft, Musgrave, Sims
This has been Green Bay’s top three tight end group in each of the past two seasons, and there is no reason for it to change.
The Contenders: Zach Tom, Elgton Jenkins, Anthony Belton, Rasheed Walker, Sean Rhyan, Jacob Monk, Aaron Banks, Jordan Morgan, John Williams, Donavan Jennings, Brant Banks, Tyler Cooper, JJ Lippe, Travis Glover, Kadeem Telfort, Trey Hill
Prediction: Tom, Rhyan, Jenkins, Banks, Walker, Morgan, Belton, Telfort, Monk, Glover
The starting five will likely be Tom, Rhyan, Jenkins, Banks, and Walker from right to left, but Morgan and Belton will undoubtedly compete for starting jobs too.
The Contenders: Lukas Van Ness, Rashan Gary, Brenton Cox, Kingsley Enagbare, Arron Mosby, Barryn Sorrell, Collin Oliver, Deslin Alexandre
Prediction: Van Ness, Gary, Cox, Sorrell, Oliver, Enagbare
With Sorrell and Oliver as 2025 draft picks, their spots should be considered locks. Gary made the Pro Bowl last season and Van Ness, a former first round pick, is going to be given his chance (again) to prove he was worth such a high selection.
Cox played well in limited snaps and Enagbare should provide some depth and knowledge of the system.
The Contenders: Kenny Clark, Devonte Wyatt, Colby Wooden, Karl Brooks, Warren Brinson, Nazir Stackhouse, James Ester, Keith Randolph
Prediction: Clark, Wyatt, Wooden, Brooks, Brinson
Clark is healthy after offseason surgery and playing hurt all last season, Wyatt had his fifth-year option picked up, and Brooks and Wooden have proven to be good depth pieces. Brinson, a sixth round pick this year, will beat out the undrafted free agents.
The Contenders: Quay Walker, Edgerrin Cooper, Isaiah McDuffie, Ty’Ron Hopper, Isaiah Simmons, Jamon Johnson
Prediction: Walker, Cooper, McDuffie, Hopper, Simmons
Not much to analyze here. Last year’s core is joined by Simmons, who will look to prove his worth as a former first round pick in a system that will use him the right way.
The Contenders: Carrington Valentine, Keisean Nixon, Nate Hobbs, Isaiah Dunn, Gregory Junior, Micah Robinson, Kamal Hadden, Kalen King, Jonathan Baldwin, Tyron Herring
Prediction: Valentine, Nixon, Hobbs, Robinson, Junior
One of the biggest question marks of the season will be how this position group performs without two-time Pro Bowler Jaire Alexander. Of course, they played most of the last two seasons without him anyway.
The Contenders: Xavier McKinney, Evan Williams, Javon Bullard, Kitan Oladapo, Zayne Anderson, Omar Brown, Khazir Brown
Prediction: McKinney, Williams, Bullard, Oladapo, Anderson
There is really nothing to analyze here. The top group last season will be the top group again.
Contenders and Prediction: Brandon McManus (K), Daniel Whelan (P), Matt Orzech (LS)
Really the biggest question here is why the Packers haven’t brought in another long snapper to compete with Orzech.
