One Dallas Cowboys star is partly at fault for Mike McCarthy sacking, LeSean McCoy says

Mike McCarthy is looking for a new job after his watching his time with the Dallas Cowboys slowly draw to a close.

LeSean McCoy and Mike McCarthy never crossed paths as a coach and player on the same team. Over the years, McCoy spent time facing McCarthy’s Green Bay Packers directly and indirectly in the NFC playoff race.

Having retired after the 2020 season following two stints with Andy Reid’s Philadelphia Eagles and Kansas City Chiefs, McCoy has spent most of the McCarthy era watching things develop from the sideline. This has offered him a fresh perspective on what went down over the past half-decade, and it wasn’t all McCarthy’s fault in his mind.

Of course, LeSean McCoy has made bold claims before. McCoy claimed Jalen Hurts was the second-best fit for the Eagles offense.

McCoy also commented on AJ Brown’s drama this season.

LeSean McCoy assigns blame

Speaking on a January 15 edition of “The Facility,” LeSean McCoy blamed Dak Prescott’s playoff stumbles as reason for Mike McCarthy’s ousting.

“If you get hired as a paid quarterback, why can’t you save your coach’s job? [You’ve been the] number two in MVP voting. Give me the equivalent in the playoffs, take your team to NFC championship game. Do these things. If you do that, we don’t have this conversation [of] are they going to hire Deion or not.”

Of course, Prescott’s struggles this year mostly came from the injury that knocked him out for most of the season, leaving McCarthy to put on a show without a headline act. Still, he delivered some memorable moments down the stretch with Cooper Rush, but it wasn’t enough.

Jerry Jones is at fault for McCarthy’s ousting, too

As the owner and the general manager, Jerry Jones has the power to do whatever he wants with the Cowboys team. Within the last 12 months, Jones procrastinated paying Dak Prescott and CeeDee Lamb. Then, once he did so essentially moments before the start of the season, he left the two to balance newfound wealth with keeping 100% focus on the task at hand.

The Cowboys predictably started slow as McCarthy was unable to cover up Jones’ mistake through giving rousing speeches and other tricks used to motivate the players. Then, both players suffered injuries. In the case of Lamb, he missed much of the preseason training camp due to the holdout resulting from Jones kicking the can down the road.
