Edmonton Oilers insider reveals McDavid is unlikely to take another hometown salary discount

Will Connor McDavid be signed to a contract extension by training camp?

Yes he will, with one year left on his $12.5 million AAV Oilers contract but it will be a three or four year extension.

McDavid may take a haircut and not sign for $20.8 million AAV, which would be the 20 per cent high allowed a player on the overall $104 million cap in 2026-2027, but fans who see him signing for, say, $16 million a year to allow for the signing of other people? They're dreaming.

McDavid famously took a few million off his annual salary on his current contract to help out the Oilers, but with the NHL's rapidly increasing salary cap, he may not do the team any more favours.

He's worth a maximum value contract of $19.1M next year, and could command that number or close to it on a short term deal.

Of course, this will be no problem for the Edmonton Oilers. Whatever terms the Captain presents to the team, the Oilers will gladly accept to keep the most valuable player in the NHL.

Oilers fans and even the organization can only hope the deal gets completed sooner rather than later, and McDavid is under contract before the beginning of the regular season.
