The Edmonton Oilers made their second wave of roster cuts on Wednesday evening, trimming their roster by nine players.
Five players were released from professional tryouts, while outright assigning four to their American Hockey League affiliate Bakersfield Condors.
It followed the team sent four junior players – Nathaniel Day, Connor Clattenburg, William Nicholl, and Dalyn Wakely – to their respective Ontario Hockey League teams on Tuesday.
The players the Oilers released are forwards Jasper Weatherby and Cameron Wright, goaltender Brett Brouchu, defencemen Connor Corcoran and Alex Kannok-Leipert. All will report to the AHL’s Condors, the club said.
Weatherby is the only player of the five with National Hockey League experience, as he scored five goals and 11 points in 50 games with the 2021-22 San Jose Sharks. Since turning professional, the 26-year-old has bounced around the American Hockey League.
Kannok-Leipert was born in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand, but moved to Saskatchewan when he was five. Although the Washington Capitals drafted him, he’s spent his major junior and professional career in British Columbia, most recently playing for the Abbotsford Canucks for three seasons.
The four players the Oilers loaned to the American Hockey League’s Bakersfield Condors are Matvey Petrov, Connor Ungar, Jayden Grubbe, and James Štefan. Petrov and Grubbe return to the team they played for last season, with the former scoring nine goals and 14 points in 53 games, while the latter scored eight goals and 14 points in 67 games.
Ungar went undrafted, but posted a .932 save percentage and a 2.15 goals-against average in 26 games last season for Brock University, signing an entry-level deal with the Oilers. The Calgary native spent his junior career playing in the WHL for the Brandon Wheat Kings, Red Deer Rebels, and Moose Jaw Warriors.
Štefan also played in the WHL, playing five seasons with the Portland Winterhawks. During the 2023-24 season, the Oilers signed the undrafted Štefan as he scored 50 goals and 101 points in 67 games for the Warriors. They went all the way to the WHL finals where Štefan scored seven goals and 16 points in 18 games, falling in four games to the aforementioned Warriors.
There’ll be more cuts in the near future as the Oilers’ season starts Oct. 9.
