The Edmonton Oilers are in the market to acquire a defenceman this season, but one potential option in Kevin Shattenkirk declined them in favour of retirement.
The Oilers were linked to signing Kevin Shattenkirk at the beginning of this season, but the veteran defender as now officially retired.
According to a new report from Frank Seravalli on OilersNow, the Edmonton inquired about signing Shattenkirk as late as November this year, but at that point, his mind was made up on retirement.
Shattenkirk is now 35 years old, and played his last season with the Boston Bruins, scoring 24 points in 61 games. The puck moving right shot defender played for 7 different teams in his 952 career games before retiring yesterday.
Edmonton Oilers asked about signing Kevin Shattenkirk Just Before Retirement
It's extremely interesting to hear the Oilers asked about signing Shattenkirk as late as November this year.
The Oilers have got quality contributions from Troy Stecher as a depth defender, but Travis Dermott hasn't been much of a success in Edmonton. Dermott has played only 5 games since November 1st, and was benched by Paul Coffey in most of his opportunities.
Edmonton seems keen to upgrade on their 7th defenceman right now for a cheap price, and they may have done so with today's waiver claim on Alec Regula - which again, isn't a good sign for Dermott.
Regula seems to be primed to earn a spot with the Oilers potentially longer-term, as the team's management sees potential in him. Honestly, it may have turned out better for Edmonton this way, acquiring a younger player instead of a 35 year old veteran.
Hockey fans will wish all the best to Shattenkirk in his retirement from the game, and his next chapter in life.
