NY Giants finally add veteran depth by signing former Jaguars CB

After missing out on several veteran cornerbacks this offseason, NY Giants general manager Joe Schoen has managed to get a move across the line. In case you missed it, Schoen and Co. brought in CB Tre Herndon in for a minicamp tryout.

With Herndon turning heads over in East Rutherford, the decision was made easy for Schoen to put an offer on the table. According to ESPN's Jordan Raanan, Herndon is putting the pen to paper on a one-year deal and he'll be back in action for the Giants once training camp arrives:

Herndon had one of the best plays from minicamp, taking a tipped Tommy DeVito pass back to the house for a pick-six. Did that go ahead and be what Schoen needed to see to put things over the edge? Who knows, but it sure helped Herndon's case.

The newest New York DB spent the first six seasons of his career with the Jaguars and Year 7 is now going to be spent in East Rutherford. In 2023, the 5-11, 190-pounder appeared in 16 games, with four starts. He posted 46 total tackles, nine pass deflections and one forced fumble.

Throughout his playing days, Herndon has 83 appearances and 34 starts to his name. He's not expected to push for a starting job, but depth has been needed for the CBs room. Deonte Banks is locked in as CB1, while Cor'Dale Flott is going to get the first crack at CB2.

However, Flott is entering Year 3 and Banks is entering his second campaign with Big Blue. Across the board, the secondary is quite young for Brian Daboll and new defensive coordinator Shane Bowen. However, Hernon provides the kind of experience that the unit has been begging for. Losing out on Tre'Davious White, Steven Nelson and Darious Williams this offseason hurt, but signing Herndon lessens the sting quite a bit.
