The Giants' quarterback situation has been a challenging one since Eli Manning retired after the 2019 season. Although it wasn't entirely unexpected, since it's never easy for a franchise to backfill a position held by a legendary player, it wasn't made easier by the chaotic tenure of Daniel Jones, whom New York put all their stock into from the beginning.
He was projected to be their next starting quarterback for years to come, only for that dream to be a roller coaster ride over the next five years. From dealing with serious injuries that kept him sidelined for prolonged periods to finally looking like the player they desired to have by taking the Giants to the playoffs in 2022, Jones brought the team on a wild ride throughout his tenure.
Because of their desperation, it inevitably led to the Giants offering a massive contract to the quarterback, which ultimately wound up being a regrettable mistake. That led to Jones being released after drama ensued during the 2023 season, forcing them to seek an alternative quarterback solution elsewhere.
And now, he's thriving with the Colts and competing for the starting role, with a new prediction suggesting he could even be vying for the Comeback Player of the Year award.
Because he has a chance to be a starting quarterback again after serving as a backup to Sam Darnold in Minnesota last year, Jones is already receiving some unexpected hype well before his Colts debut.
With Anthony Richardson continuing to deal with injuries, Jones is on track to take the starting role much sooner than anyone anticipated, with some analysts, like NFL.com's Jeffri Chadiha, boldly predicting he could win Comeback Player of the Year.
"Now, Jones gets to work with a creative offensive head coach in Shane Steichen, who happens to be the same man who helped take Jalen Hurts from raw talent to MVP-caliber quarterback in Philadelphia. Steichen likes quarterbacks who can move, and his time with Hurts proved that he could think outside of the box when it comes to maximizing a signal-caller's strengths.
Steichen easily could be the man to take Jones to another level, especially when considering the Colts have better skill players and offensive line play than Jones ever enjoyed in New York. Nobody saw Darnold taking off when he arrived in Minnesota. Jones could do similar things in Indy if he stays healthy."
Although it doesn't directly impact the Giants, since he's now with an AFC team, it would be a bad look for how they handled the situation with Jones if he proves to be a viable quarterback for another team so quickly.
That would be even more problematic given their mostly unimpressive quarterback room led by Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston. Of course, rookie Jaxson Dart is expected to be a starter at some point, and he could become the quarterback they have long needed, but if Jones shows he could've been that with a new team, it could prove to be a nightmare scenario.
The hope is that Dart will be everything they want and more out of their next franchise quarterback. That would be ideal and put the team back on track to competing in the NFC again. That might not happen as quickly as fans had hoped, but better late than never, right?
