NFL may open door for Jayden Daniels disaster Commanders don't need

The Commanders will be keeping a close eye on this.
Jayden Daniels

It wouldn't be too dramatic to say that Jayden Daniels is one of the NFL's faces already. He's also the Washington Commanders' most prized possession as the superstar quarterback who dragged this downtrodden franchise back among the contenders in Year 1 of his professional career.

The Commanders surrounded Daniels with an improved supporting cast this offseason. They are doing everything possible to maximize his rookie deal, and they can ill afford anything getting in the way.

There is some concern that an upcoming NFL decision could jeopardize that considerably.

Commanders could allow Jayden Daniels to participate in 2028 Olympics

According to Tom Pelissero from the NFL Network, owners will discuss a resolution at next week's league meeting that would allow professional players to compete in the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. This will include flag football for the first time, and no more than one player from each team, coupled with a designated international player, will be permitted to participate.

This brings excitement and trepidation in equal measure. Players would no doubt relish the prospect of representing their country at such a prestigious event. For the clubs that invest millions into their stars, there will be nervousness.

The last thing the Commanders, or anyone around the league, wants is for their franchise player to get hurt doing something that isn't team-related. Considering Daniels might have a barrier-breaking extension sewn up by the time 2028 rolls around, there is a lot potentially at stake.

Daniels might not enter consideration. Higher-profile names such as Lamar Jackson and Patrick Mahomes might get the nod to boost the brand. But if the former LSU star continues his meteoric rise to superstardom, he could be at the front of the queue.

The Commanders are a long way from this becoming a serious concern. The Olympics isn't until 2028, but if the owners give this their seal of approval, it won't take long for speculation to rise and decisions made regarding who could be on the shortlist for inclusion. And it won't take long for Daniels' name to come up.

It'll be interesting to see what the outcome of this will eventually be. The flag football stars, hoping for a shot at the limelight, are going to have something to say about the NFL guys getting involved. But this is about much more than a gold medal.

Daniels' mobility, creativity, and dynamism would be a major asset. Whether he ends up on the squad remains to be seen, but it's a headache the Commanders don't need.
