NFL insider reveals ‘major holdup’ in potential Jalen Ramsey trade

Jalen Ramsey‘s future with the Miami Dolphins is uncertain heading into in 2025 NFL season. After spending two seasons with the franchise, could both sides move on this offseason?

Ramsey’s potential move comes less than a year after the Dolphins signed him to a three-year extension worth $72.1 million last September. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, this might not be the only reason why he hasn’t been dealt thus far.

“After June 1, Sunday, they can save about $10 million on the cap if they trade him. If they did it now, per se, in May, then that would be an $8.5 million hit against the cap. So, a pretty big swing,” Fowler explained. “So it benefits them to do something in June.

“They’ve been engaged with multiple teams. From what I’m told, the LA Rams have been one, although there’s not really anything moving right now last I checked on that. So something’s going to have to heat up with the team. The problem is the $24 million in guaranteed money he has this year. That is a major holdup.”

More than just the Rams, it was noted that the Washington Commanders have also been in contact with the Dolphins about potentially acquiring Ramsey. If the Rams do end up making a move, it would be his second stint with the franchise after playing there from 2019 through 2022 and even won a Super Bowl with the team. Other teams such as the Atlanta Falcons, Detroit Lions and Philadelphia Eagles has reportedly shown interest in his services as well.

Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel was asked numerous times about Ramsey, his interest with the team and to address the trade rumors surrounding the star defensive back. McDaniel talked around each question, deferring to his focus being on the team in each answer.

“I mean, quite honestly, zero has changed since the last time I said anything about him,” McDaniel said. “Very much interested in the players that I’m coaching on the field today. And I think if you have a team that’s focused on getting better each and every day, that’s plenty for me to worry about. And I guess I’ll leave it at that.”

Whether the Dolphins decide to move Ramsey during June, or keep him on the roster for the start of the 2025 NFL season remains to be seen. McDaniels was mum on timeline for the Dolphins’ ultimate decision on him as well.
