When the Los Angeles Rams traded Jared Goff to the Detroit Lions in 2021, few expected the former No. 1 overall pick to resurrect his career in Motown.
The blockbuster deal sent Goff, along with two first-round picks and a third-rounder to Detroit in exchange for veteran QB Matthew Stafford. At the time, it looked like a lopsided win for the Rams, who went on to win Super Bowl 56 with Stafford under center. But in the years since, Goff has defied expectations, emerging as a franchise cornerstone for the Lions.
Now, four years after the draft that sent the QB to Detroit, Bill Barnwell of ESPN thinks Goff would be worth at least “one first-round pick” if the Lions wanted to trade him again.
Here’s What Bill Barnwell Said About Jared Goff’s Current Trade Value

GettyWhat is Detroit Lions quarterback Jared Goff’s trade value?
To be clear, Barnwell was assessing the trade value of every NFL team’s best players, and he dubbed offensive lineman Penei Sewell and edge Aidan Hutchinson Detroit’s top duo, both worthy of multiple first-rounders.
He deemed Goff worthy of at least one future first, but the QB’s hefty $212 million contract could be prohibitive if the Lions did want to trade him.
“While he has done excellent work to rebuild his career in Detroit, some of the credit for those improvements will likely go to Ben Johnson, his now-departed coordinator,” Barnwell wrote about Goff.
“Goff has plenty of fans, and he can be nearly unstoppable when he gets hot, but there still are whispers about his struggles against pressure and organizations that would be nervous about paying him $53 million per season.”
Goff Resurrected His Career in Detroit
Goff’s NFL journey took a turn for the better when he was traded to the Lions. He threw for 4,438 yards and 29 touchdowns with only seven interceptions in 2022, earning a Pro Bowl nod as an alternate. He followed that up in 2023 with 4,575 yards and 30 TDs, completing 67.3 % of his passes, culminating in the Lions’ first postseason win since 1991 and a run to the NFC Championship Game.
In 2024, Goff had the best season of his career: He finished with a career‑best 72.4 % completion rate, throwing for 4,629 yards and 37 touchdowns, earning his fourth Pro Bowl selection.
He also pulled off incredibly impressive feats like going 18-for-18 for 292 yards Week 4 against the Seattle Seahawks. That performance set an NFL record as the first QB to complete over 10 attempts with zero incompletions.
Jared Goff just set the record for most passing attempts without an incompletion in a single game in NFL history.

Goff’s Contract Runs Through 2027
Goff’s current $212 million deal has $170 million guaranteed, and it keeps him in Detroit through 2027. Heading into the 2025 season, he’s widely regarded as a top‑10 quarterback. Teams simply don’t trade top 10 QBs away, particularly if they’re winning with him under center.
Barnwell noting some teams would be “nervous” about paying Goff’s hefty salary is fair. Goff is approaching 31, and if he shows a decline in performance now that Ben Johnson has left to coach the Bears, his trade value would take a hit. That’s why it’s likely the Lions will roll with him for at least a few more years.
Regardless, the fact that his trade value has only gone up as he’s gotten older is a very good sign for Goff and the Lions.
