NFL finds new way to bury Commanders with brutal leaked schedule gauntlet

There was growing speculation linking the Washington Commanders with a Christmas Day game this season. A new report lent further weight to these rumors, and the opponent couldn't be more intriguing.

According to Kevin Sheehan from The Team 980, Washington will host the Dallas Cowboys on Netflix on the most festive day of the year. He added that it will probably be the 1 p.m. Eastern Time slot, although the 4.30 p.m. ET location wasn't completely dismissed.

Commanders must embrace their new reality as a prime-time darling

This is the price of Washington's newfound adulation. Fans aren't entirely pleased with a Christmas Day game. Players and coaches would probably like to spend time with their families, but the NFL is intent on dominating every major holiday. The money from networks and streaming services only sweetens the pot.

If this report is accurate, it also leaves the Commanders facing a crucial five-day stretch where they'll face two fierce division rivals at home. They've already been confirmed for FOX's double-header on Saturday, December 20, against the Philadelphia Eagles at Northwest Stadium. The turnaround will be incredibly quick before facing the Cowboys.

That brings a different set of complications. It's also at the end of a punishing season, so strong resolve is crucial. Fortunately for the Commanders, they have a nice blend of youth and experience capable of keeping complications to a minimum.

It's not ideal. But for the Commanders, it's better than being stuck in the football wilderness with nothing going for them. That's been the case for the best part of 20 years before the new regime came on board. These high-profile games on the biggest stages represent a refreshing change of pace.

Quinn and his players just need to suck it up, remain professional, and keep the common goal at the forefront. But this gauntlet through Weeks 16 and 17 could have major ramifications attached when it's all said and done.

The Commanders are a hot commodity again. Playing on the Christmas Day stage might not be to the taste of every fan, but those inside the building better embrace their new reality or face the consequences.
