The 2025 NFL Draft is getting close and closer, and everyone wants to know what the Detroit Lions are going to do. People are begging for any kind of intel they can find. Even the kind that makes no sense at all.
ESPN draft analyst Matt Miller put together a story in which he talked about what he's hearing for all 32 teams when it comes to who they could draft. In that story, he said not to be shocked if the Lions draft a cornerback with one of their first four picks. Specifically, a nickel corner.
Now I won't argue that the Lions could be in the market for a cornerback. There is always a good thing to have some good depth. Where it makes no sense is at the nickel spot. The Lions have that spot more than covered.
For starters, Amik Robertson was very good there last year. He's expected to take up that spot again and be the starter there in 2025. Behind him would be Ennis Rakestraw. He was supposed to be the starting nickel corner going into Week 2, but then a pre-game injury held him out, and then he missed most of the season.
Then there's Brian Branch. We know that Branch played primarily safety this season, but he played nickel corner his entire rookie season and then played nickel again in 2024 for the final four games of the year and was very good at it.
The Lions may take a corner at some point, and it wouldn't be shocking. They met with Kansas' Cobee Bryant, Iowa State's Darrien Porter, Florida State's Azareye'h Thomas, Louisville's Quincy Riley, and South Carolina's O'Donnel Fortune at the NFL Combine. Then they recently had Kentucky's Max Hairston in for a top-30 visit. None of those guys play slot corner.
The only real argument you can make is that Robertson is in the final year of his contract, but at 26 years old, it would be a shocker if they didn't try to hold onto a corner who can play inside and outside as well as he does.
We'll see what happens in the draft very soon, but this would be a shock despite Miller telling you not to be shocked.
