For most, the Kansas City Chiefs will enter the NFL Draft in a little under two weeks with their first-round selection, for all intents and purposes, already signed, sealed, and delivered.
While mock drafts are flying off the shelves right now, there have been some that have the Chiefs beefing up their defensive line with Derrick Harmon, which is a smart pick.
Others have them taking a running back or even a receiver (highly doubtful), but the biggest theme of the offseason has been reinforcing the offensive line.
For NFL.com's Adam Rank, in his latest mock draft, he bases his selections on what teams "should" do, and for Kansas City, it's as easy as one, two, three.
"Chiefs, you need to get tougher in the trenches," Rank writes. "Yes, you signed Jaylon Moore, but he's just one (relatively unproven) addition. I know Simmons is coming off a season-ending knee injury, but as long as everything checks out, draft my guy Josh here and put him at left tackle, and you won't have to think about it for another decade."
Left tackle is the obvious choice.
Jaylon Moore only has 12 starts in his four-year career, and with a host of quality options at tackle in this draft class, as Rank points out, take Josh Simmons and the left tackle position is set for the next decade.
Is it really as easy as that? Not likely, but the Chiefs' 30 visits also tell a tale, with eight out of the 18 players visiting the franchise being offensive linemen. Make of that what you will.
Patrick Mahomes was sacked 47 times last season, the most in his career (including playoffs), and when you have a generational talent, you want him protected.
Getting Simmons accomplishes that, which is why the Chiefs "should" do it.
