A remarkable start for the Washington Commanders in 2024 could see general manager Adam Peters shift his approach. The front-office leader won't do anything to jeopardize the team's long-term future under his guidance, but a serious discussion needs to be had about what comes next with the trade deadline fast approaching.
The Commanders are in a strong position to make moves. Peters has been more keen to ship out the deadwood and stockpile draft assets throughout his tenure so far. But with Jayden Daniels emerging as a genuine franchise-caliber quarterback that this organization can lean on, those in power could decide on being more aggressive to give their chances this season a huge shot in the arm.
It's a tricky spot. Peters needs to find the right deal with someone who can provide more than just a quick fix. The Commanders didn't show any interest in Davante Adams, which is a sign they want to examine options with a bit more upside if an incoming is being considered. This also fits with how the former San Francisco 49ers executive has approached his roster-building ethos so far.
Tee Higgins named as dream Commanders trade target before 2024 deadline
Benjamin Solak of ESPN thinks he's found the ideal solution. The analyst touted wide receiver Tee Higgins as a dream trade target for the Commanders. He's likely coming to the end of his time with the Cincinnati Bengals. Washington can also offer him a long-term extension with $122.5 million in salary-cap space at its disposal next spring with 30 players under contract.
With rookie QB Jayden Daniels looking like the real deal, the Commanders can now aggressively spend to build a contending team and maximize his rookie contract window. [Tee] Higgins is awesome on those vertical one-on-ones that are a huge part of Daniels' game, and he brings a size dimension that's currently lacking on the Commanders' receiving corps. And critically, the Commanders have the cap space to pay Higgins the enormous contract he is absolutely due.Benjamin Solak, ESPN
Higgins is playing on the franchise tag this season. The Bengals are sitting at 1-4 and still have to pay wideout Ja'Marr Chase. There doesn't appear much chance the former Clemson star will get the payday he's seeking from his current employers, so the AFC North squad could decide to get something back in return if they cannot pick up a few wins before the deadline.
There will be a queue of suitors for Higgins' services in free agency if the Bengals let things get that far. If Peters decides that this could be a legitimate difference-maker to put alongside Terry McLaurin and help Daniels take that next step, giving up a draft pick - likely a Day 2 selection - to get him into the fold and tie the pass-catcher down long-term is an option to consider.
Others will also come under the microscope between now and the trade deadline, which just so happens to be election day this year. Peters could easily retain his assets and have faith in the options available. At the same time, Higgins represents an immediate upgrade on anything aside from McLaurin. He is also just 25 years old.
The age factor might be the most important thing above all else if Higgins enters Washington's thought process. This is still a precarious situation for the Commanders. But with some winnable games upcoming over the next month and a big challenge at the Baltimore Ravens thrown in for good measure, a situation could emerge where this blossoming project is ready to compete much sooner than anticipated.
If that's the case and Peters can get some bang for his buck, don't be surprised if another dynamic weapon for Daniels is acquired. And they could do far worse than look in Higgins' direction.
