Any mending the relationship between the Miami Dolphins and wide receiver Tyreek Hill needed appeared to happen this offseason. The Dolphins moved on from cornerback Jalen Ramsey but remained committed to Hill.
However, Pro Football Sports Network’s Jacob Infante argued that commitment could be fleeting if Hill causes any more drama. Infante also suggested Hill enters 2025 as more than just a potential trade chip — but a cut candidate as well.
Infante named one “shocking” cut candidate for all 32 teams on Friday. He picked Hill for the Dolphins.
“For the record, Tyreek Hill makes much more sense as a trade option. Not only would a player of his caliber reel in solid value in a trade, but the Miami Dolphins would save over $20 million more trading him rather than releasing him,” wrote Infante.
“Keeping Hill here doesn’t make him a cut candidate, but rather a ‘player who could be on the move’ candidate. Hill was vocal near the end of last season that he wasn’t happy with the current state of the Dolphins’ organization. If those concerns remain strong, he could try to push himself out like Jalen Ramsey did.”
Infante was referring to Hill’s post-Week 18 outburst where he inferred he could be done playing for the Dolphins.
“I’m opening the door. I’m out, bro,” Hill told reporters, via The Miami Herald’s Omar Kelly. “It was great playing here, but at the end of the day, I got to do what’s best for my career.
“I’m too much of a competitor to be just out there.”
Unsettled Drama With Tyreek Hill, Dolphins?
Hill provided that “wild” response following the season finale after the Dolphins lost to the New York Jets to drop to 8-9. The defeat officially eliminated Miami from the playoffs.
The Dolphins also needed the Denver Broncos to lose to the Kansas City Chiefs in Week 18. The Broncos blew out the Chiefs, who were resting their players for the postseason.
Hill didn’t play again in Week 18 after it became clear in the third quarter the Broncos were going to beat the Chiefs. That, combined with his comments, led pundits to speculate Hill had quit on the Dolphins.
But Miami quickly worked to patch things up with the receiver in January. The receiver met with head coach Mike McDaniel and general manager Chris Grier in the days after the season finale to “clear the air.” Hill’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, also released a statement.
“Tyreek is very passionate,” Rosenhaus said to reporters. “Anyone I’ve ever represented that was great was passionate, they cared. What you see with Tyreek is very genuine. He wants to win. It’s not good enough for him not to make the playoffs. He’s very passionate.”
Drama has followed Hill for much of his career. But there isn’t any indication that what Hill said after Week 18 could lead to the Dolphins cutting the veteran receiver.
What It Would Cost Dolphins to Release Hill
If Infante was going for most shocking cut candidates, he succeeded naming Hill. Put another way, it’s highly unlikely the Dolphins release the veteran receiver.
For one, that wouldn’t make any financial sense. The Dolphins would have about a $40.4 million dead cap hit for 2025 if they released Hill this summer.
The former All-Pro had a down 2024 campaign, but he still has value. So, if Miami wanted to move on from Hill, as Infante put it, the team would very likely part with him via a trade instead of releasing him.
But Hill may need to really become a problem for even that to be realistic before the 2025 season. Miami is coming off a disappointing 2024 campaign. It’s not out of the question that McDaniel will be coaching for his job this fall.
To bounce back and make the playoffs again, McDaniel needs Hill on the roster and producing.
Rumors continue to swirl around Hill. But with training camp about to begin, they don’t seem very plausible.
