The New York Jets have been a hot topic of conversation among NFL fans and analysts for, well, months. However, the last two weeks, in particular, have been incredibly interesting to watch unfold. Following their Week Five loss to the Minnesota Vikings in London, the Jets fired head coach Robert Saleh and replaced him with Jeff Ulbrich, their defensive coordinator.
In their first game after firing Saleh, the Jets fell to the Buffalo Bills 23-20 in what was an incredibly frustrating performance by the offense. After the game, four-time NFL MVP Aaron Rodgers called out wide receiver Mike Williams for running the wrong route on his game-sealing interception.
Additionally, following the loss, the Jets traded for Davante Adams.
New York Jets Wide Receiver Mike Williams Missed Practice Following the Davante Adams Trade
Prior the season, the Jets signed Mike Williams in hopes that he would help bolster their offense and be another weapon for Rodgers to utilize in the passing game. However, Williams missed much of the offseason activities and training camp due to his recovery from a torn ACL that he suffered last season.
While he has played in every game this season, he has only been targeted 17 times and has just 10 receptions for 145 yards. He has yet to score a touchdown with the Jets.
Following the news of the Adams trade, Williams did not show up for practice on Wednesday or Thursday. Coach Ulbrich said that he missed practice for personal reasons.
But when he did return to practice on Friday, he worked out on the sideline despite the fact that he is healthy.
Many wonder if his absence this week was due to his unhappiness with his role on the offense, and there have been reports that other NFL teams have called the Jets to inquire about Williams’ availability on the trade block.
While this whole situation seems muddled, there is one certainty: Williams is suiting up for the Jets on Sunday.
New York Jets Wide Receiver Mike Williams Will Play on Sunday
According to Rich Cimini of ESPN, Williams is planning on playing for New York in their Week Seven game against the Pittsburgh Steelers.
When asked about whether he wants to be traded or not, Williams said, “I’m where my feet at. That’s the main thing for me. I came here for a reason. I’m here. I’m excited for this weekend … and to play on Sunday.”
Williams also revealed that Rodgers initiated a one-on-one meeting with him during the week. He also revealed that he is in no way upset about the future Pro Football Hall of Famer calling him out to the media.
The former Los Angeles Chargers wide receiver is now likely slotting in as New York’s fourth wide receiver behind Adams, Garrett Wilson, and Allen Lazard.
While he may be suiting up this weekend, it remains to be seen if he will stay in a Jets uniform all season. New York has proven to be one of the most unpredictable teams in the NFL this year, and that is not necessarily a compliment.
