The New York Giants made one of the biggest moves in the 2025 NFL Draft, trading back into the first round to select quarterback Jaxson Dart. While many teams that take a first-round quarterback expect him to play right away, this is not the case for Dart. The Giants signed Jameis Winston and Russell Wilson in the offseason, with the latter being the expected week 1 starter. Dart will be able to sit back and develop. That hasn’t stopped people from getting excited about the future. One person who is reportedly very excited about Dart is head coach Brian Daboll.
New York Giants Jaxson Dart Hype
Before he was the head coach of the New York Giants, Daboll was the offensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills. He is credited with developing reigning league MVP Josh Allen. According to ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, Daboll is more excited about Jaxson Dart than he was about Allen.
“I heard he threw the ball well yesterday. It’s only one day of rookie minicamp, but Brian Daboll is really excited about this guy. More excited about him than really any other quarterback since Josh Allen that he’s worked with. And so, really, it’s a matter of when he plays. The Giants do feel like they have an infrastructure in place with a good defense with Russell Wilson to win games and help him just develop behind the scenes. But we know if they do lose in games, there’s going to be pressure to play him.”
That is some high praise for the young quarterback. Allen was a project coming out of Wyoming, but has developed into one of the best players in the league. Daboll will get a chance to do it again with Dart. Fowler points out that the biggest question is when he plays. That question spawns tons of questions about the future.
Tons Of Questions
Daboll has said he expects Wilson to be the starter in the opening week. However, if the team starts losing, pressure will mount for Jaxson Dart to play, and pressure on Daboll will also begin to mount. There were reports he was on the hot seat this past season, but the front office decided to keep him. If the team has another losing season, it doesn’t matter how excited Daboll is about the young quarterback. He may not be around to see the development.
One of the issues that plagues young quarterbacks can be a rotating coaching staff. If a young player has to learn a new playbook and offense constantly, it can stunt development. This is a huge storyline to watch in 2025, regardless of what the New York Giants’ record is.
Final Thoughts
How long will the New York Giants stick with Russell Wilson? It likely depends on how the offense is running. If the Giants’ defense continues to be sneaky good but the offense can’t score points, the cries will get louder to start the first-round quarterback.
