One of the wildest parts of the 2025 draft was high-profile quarterback Shedeur Sanders of the Colorado Buffaloes not getting drafted until the final day of the draft. In the months leading up to the draft, Sanders was largely expected to be among the very first quarterbacks to get drafted, and multiple teams expressed major interest in the high-performing signal-caller, including the New York Giants.
But, something happened, and nobody even really knows what. In the end, people started to wonder if he actually wouldn’t even be drafted at all. But, finally, Sanders heard his name called on the last day of the draft. He was drafted by the Cleveland Browns as a fifth-round pick.
Instead, the Giants traded up to draft Jaxson Dart, so they must see something special in Dart. But, of course, some followers have questioned if the Giants should have taken Sanders when he was available.
More Drama From Shedeur Sanders
On June 18, Michael David Smith of NBC Sports reported that Sanders was ticketed in the Cleveland suburb of Strongsville for a speeding violation. He was reportedly driving 101 miles per hour in a 60 mph zone.
According to Fox 8 in Cleveland, Sanders was handed a citation for driving 101 mph on 71 North at 12:24 a.m. on Tuesday. They add that Sanders can either pay a fine or contest the ticket in a court of law.
As Smith notes, “A speeding ticket is far from the worst offense a person can commit, but this won’t do anything to challenge perceptions that Sanders lacks the maturity NFL teams look for in their franchise quarterback.” He adds, “Once the betting favorite to be the first overall pick in the draft, Sanders fell to the fifth round amid talk that teams weren’t impressed with the way he conducted himself during the pre-draft process.”
So, yes, a speeding ticket is something many people have been handed in the course of their lives. But, going 101 mph, especially in a 60 mph zone, is really fast. I don’t think I’ve ever driven that fast in my life. It seems a bit reckless, especially for someone who may have a bright future in the NFL.
Shedeur Sanders, Jaxson Dart Have Something Prove, NFL Analyst Says
In a June 10 feature for CBS Sports, Josh Edwards names a handful of new NFL players who he believes have to really prove their value and worth in 2025. He names Giants quarterback Dart and Sanders on that tally.
“From populating first-round mock drafts to fifth-round draft pick, Sanders has a lot to prove,” he notes. “Although he may not have been a first-round-caliber talent, few would argue that he was not worthy of hearing his name called on Day 2.”
For Dart, he says, “The Giants traded up into the first round to secure Dart. There had been rumors of the front office and coaching staff’s infatuation with the quarterback prior to draft night and leadership has done nothing to hide those feelings post-selection. Dart may be the key to coach Brian Daboll and general manager Joe Schoen’s fate beyond this season, as well.”
