Mikko Rantanen was the big fish of the NHL trade deadline this year, and the Edmonton Oilers were interested enough to begin contract negotiations - only to be shut down by Rantanen himself.
According to previous reports this week, the Oilers interest in Mikko Rantanen progressed far enough to offering a salary higher than Dallas offered.
Mikko Rantanen reportedly unwilling to sign with Edmonton Oilers despite higher contract offer
According to recent interviews with Hurricanes coach Rob Brind'Amour and GM Eric Tulsky, there were only 4 teams that Rantanen was willing to sign with - and hence only 4 teams that were real trade destinations for him.
According to a new report from David Pagnotta of the Fourth Period, Rantanen was only willing to sign with the Dallas Stars, Florida Panthers, Vegas Golden Knights, and Toronto Maple Leafs.
This is a big departure from Ryan Rishaug's report, which indicated that Rantanen was interested in joining Edmonton and the team was into contract talks.
Sources say Rantanen had interest in coming to Edmonton and things were well down the path of an extension being agreed to - $ were north of what Dallas signed him for.
It's very unfortunate that Rantanen wasn't willing to sign with the Oilers, as it would be been a phenomenal addition to the team. The superstar Finnish forward has put up multiple 100 point seasons and has history playing alongside elite players.
After missing out on Mikko Rantanen, it's not likely the Oilers will just give up on adding a top six superstar. Some reports have linked the Oilers to making a pitch to Mitch Marner if the Leafs forward hits free agency.
Hopefully the Oilers can add another superstar level talent to their team, and show Rantanen what he makes out on.
