Micah Parsons Makes Decision on Cowboys’ Training Camp Amid Contract Dispute

The Dallas Cowboys have sorted out the majority of their major storylines this offseason, but the one remaining item on their to-do list involves signing superstar defender Micah Parsons to a long-term contract extension. To this point, there has been little progress toward a new deal, with fans beginning to worry now that training camp is about to get underway.

While the negotiations with Parsons have been messy and spilled out into the public on several occasions throughout the offseason, the former Penn State Nittany Lions star has said he intends to show up for training camp, regardless of whether or not he has a new deal. However, with no progress being made, has Parsons changed his tune on his training camp plans?

Micah Parsons Reportedly Intends on Showing Up for Cowboys’ Training Camp

Ever since getting selected with the No. 12 overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, Parsons has been one of the most disruptive defenders in the league. In four seasons, he’s racked up 52.5 total sacks and 63 tackles for a loss, helping him earn four Pro Bowl selections, a pair of spots on the All-Pro First Team, and the 2021 Defensive Rookie of the Year Award.

As he enters the final year of his rookie deal, Parsons hasn’t been shy about his desire to land a new contract this offseason. While he’s set to earn a salary of over $24 million in 2025, having some sort of long-term security is clearly important for Parsons. From the Cowboys’ perspective, they don’t want to run the risk of letting him hit the open market next offseason, so there’s going to be a sense of urgency once training camp gets underway.

Whether or not Parsons shows up, though, is the big question, as he could opt to hold out and wait for his contract situation to get settled before he takes the field. Parsons has said publicly on several occasions that’s not what he intends to do, and sure enough, reports indicate he will be present for the start of training camp with the rest of his teammates.

“Cowboys 3x All-Pro Micah Parsons will report to Oxnard, California for training camp despite not having a long-term contract extension with the organization, sources tell me,” Jordan Schultz of Fox Sports reported in a post on X.

There’s no doubt that Parsons is going to earn a massive pay raise, regardless of when he gets his new contract. Given the price involved, though, and the Cowboys’ desire not to spend their entire salary cap on his deal, it shouldn’t come as much of a surprise that it’s taken a while for the two sides to find common ground.

The longer Dallas waits, though, the more speculation that will surround Parsons’ future with the team. The fact that he’s planning on showing up for the start of training camp is encouraging, so it’s now going to be on the Cowboys’ front office to pony up and pay their superstar defender what he rightfully deserves, or else they run the risk of seeing this situation take a turn for the worse.
