Megatron Sends Bullish Message on Rams’ New All-Pro Weapon

When Calvin Johnson speaks, the football world listens. The Detroit Lions legend, known to fans as “Megatron,” made a guest appearance on Kay Adams’ Up & Adams show, where he offered some unique insight into the Los Angeles Rams’ newest offensive weapon: six-time Pro Bowler and three-time First-Team All-Pro Davante Adams.

Calvin Johnson Sends Bullish Message on Rams' Davante Adams

With Johnson’s firsthand experience catching passes from Matthew Stafford, his perspective on how he and Adams will mesh in LA is invaluable, and perhaps even a warning to the rest of the NFL of what’s to come.

Calvin Johnson Breaks Down the Rams’ New Duo

Davante Adams

GettyIt’s going to take more than just previous accolades and pure talent for Matthew Stafford and Davante Adams to find success together.

Johnson, who played with Stafford for seven seasons together in Detroit, didn’t hesitate to express his confidence in the Rams’ new duo on offense.

“I saw Davante grow into a very solid receiver,” Johnson said. “A great receiver from his time in Green Bay to where he is now.” From Aaron Rodgers in Green Bay to Derek Carr and the various quarterbacks in Las Vegas, Adams made it work regardless of who was throwing him the ball. Now with a proven gunslinger in Stafford, the expectations are sky-high.

Johnson went on to mention that receivers new to Stafford often needed to adjust to his strong arm. “Even though when a new receiver came to our team, they always had to adjust to the fastball that Matthew throws,” he said. “I would imagine Aaron Rodgers having a similar arm strength, [Adams will] be able to adapt fairly quickly.”

This level of belief in the duo’s potential doesn’t come lightly. Johnson knows better than most the kind of work ethic it takes to succeed with Stafford. When Kay Adams asked how chemistry can be built quickly between a new receiver and Stafford, Johnson emphasized a culture of relentless preparation.

“You work and you talk. You work and you communicate,” Johnson said. “Put the work in, and you show that you want to work because Matthew’s gonna put the work in. He wants to see that and he wants to have that trust and get that level of accountability.”

In other words, the Stafford-Adams pairing won’t be built on pure talent and previous accolades. It’ll be grounded in effort, repetition, and the mental side of the game. The benefit here for Los Angeles? Both players are battle-tested veterans who know what it takes to succeed at the highest level.

Davante Adams vs. Cooper Kupp: Megatron Weighs in on the WR Transition in LA

While Adams’ move to the Rams has stirred excitement, it also raises the question: How will his role compare to that of Cooper Kupp? Kay Adams posed that question to Johnson.

“The differences in their game, I feel like they have, as far as the plays they’ve made, the big plays that kinda splashed, the splash plays that they can make, they’re very similar in that aspect,” Johnson said.

He’s not wrong. Both Kupp and Adams have been prolific at creating explosive plays, though they go about it in different ways. Kupp’s elite route-running and ability to find soft spots in zone coverage made him Stafford’s safety net. Adams, on the other hand, brings a more physical and isolation-heavy style that often sees him winning one-on-one matchups with ease.

“I think [Adams] gets to come in and pick up where Cooper left off and then some,” Johnson boldly added, suggesting Adams can elevate the Rams’ passing game even without Kupp in the offense.

What’s the difference between Cooper Kupp and Davante Adams… for Matthew Stafford?👀
