Monday was the first day of the legal tampering period in free agency, and the Las Vegas Raiders lost several of their notable free agents. Safety Tre'Von Moehrig signed with the Carolina Panthers, linebacker Robert Spillane left for the New England Patriots, and cornerback Nate Hobbs struck a deal with the Green Bay Packers.
Star defensive end Maxx Crosby spoke directly to Hobbs on his Instagram story, saying, "Love you for life brother, got me in your corner forever." He also had a message for Moehrig and Spillane on Monday.
"I love y'all like my brothers," Crosby wrote. "You deserve every penny."
For the first time in recent memory, the Las Vegas Raiders had a handful of players set to test free agency that had quite a market for themselves. That made life difficult for new Raiders general manager John Spytek, who, despite the team's ample cap space, could not afford to re-sign every player.
Spytek refused to overpay for players, which many other general managers did on Monday. He did make several moves this offseason before free agency began, however, including a trade for quarterback Geno Smith and extending Crosby.
Instead of spending big, Spytek found value in players like Malcolm Koonce and Jeremy Chinn. Super Bowls are not won in free agency, but they can certainly be lost.
